The studio

One cutting table,
six machines, one shop.

Placket is the third floor of an old garment building on East 3rd Street, Los Angeles: a cutting table, six sewing machines, a pressing iron and a shop at the front.

How a piece is made

Four steps,
all in one room.

Drafted on paper

01

Drafted on paper

Every style starts as a paper pattern, sewn up in calico and tried on three people before we cut a metre of the real cloth.

Cut forty at a time

02

Cut forty at a time

Forty layers on the table, chalked once and cut with a straight knife. Small runs mean a sleeve can change between batches.

Measured and sewn

03

Measured and sewn

Eleven people at six machines, one garment from start to finish each, measured against the pattern before it is pressed.

Folded and sent

04

Folded and sent

Folded the way you would fold it into a drawer, wrapped in paper and tied with cotton string.
